How tax works for employees in Ireland

If you work for an Irish employer, tax is taken from each payslip under the PAYE system. Three separate deductions apply:

  • Income tax is 20% on income up to your standard rate band (€44,000 for a single person in 2026) and 40% above it. Tax credits are then subtracted from the result. Most employees get at least the personal credit and the employee (PAYE) credit, €4,000 in total.
  • USC (Universal Social Charge) is charged in bands on your gross income. If your total income is €13,000 or less, no USC is due at all.
  • PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) is a flat percentage of all your pay once you earn more than €352 a week. It funds the State Pension, illness benefit and other social welfare payments.
  • My Future Fund is the pension auto-enrolment scheme. If you have no company pension, it takes 1.5% of your gross pay after tax, matched by your employer, with a top-up from the State.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on €50,000 in Ireland?

As a single PAYE employee in 2026 you pay about €7,200 income tax, €1,033 USC and €2,119 PRSI, which leaves €39,648 a year or €3,304 a month.

What are the three deductions on an Irish payslip?

Income tax (charged at 20% and 40%, reduced by tax credits), the Universal Social Charge (USC, charged in bands on gross income) and Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI, a flat percentage of pay once you earn more than the weekly threshold).

Do pension contributions reduce my tax?

Yes for income tax: contributions within the age-related limit get relief at your marginal rate. They do not reduce USC or PRSI, which are charged on your gross pay.

I just moved to Ireland. Will my first payslips be different?

Probably. Until your job is registered with Revenue and your employer receives a Revenue Payroll Notification, you can be charged emergency tax without your credits. Once you have a PPS number, register for myAccount and add the new job there. Any tax overpaid in the meantime is refunded.

What is My Future Fund and will it reduce my take-home pay?

My Future Fund is Ireland's pension auto-enrolment scheme, which started in 2026. If you are aged 23 to 59, earn €20,000 or more and are not in a company pension through payroll, you are enrolled automatically. You can opt out in months 7 and 8 and get your own contributions back. In 2026 you pay 1.5% of your gross pay, your employer matches it and the State adds 0.5%. There is no tax relief on your contribution, so on €50,000 your take-home pay drops by €750 a year, while €1,750 goes into your pension. Choose it under Workplace pension in the calculator.

Does the calculator include the Rent Tax Credit?

Yes. Tick "I rent my home privately" to add it. It is claimed through Revenue myAccount, either during the year or after the year ends.
