About ExpatSalary
Moving country for a job means comparing salaries in a tax system you do not know yet. ExpatSalary exists to answer one question clearly: how much of that salary will you actually take home?
What you can do here
- Work out your take-home pay in Ireland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, the UK and Turkey, with every step of the calculation shown: income tax, social security, regional taxes and credits.
- Go the other way: find the gross salary you need for the take-home pay you want, with the net to gross calculator.
- Compare countries: see one salary side by side across Europe in compare countries, or the salary that keeps your current take-home pay with the salary equivalent calculator.
- See what expat tax regimes are worth: the Netherlands' 30% ruling, Spain's Beckham Law, Portugal's IFICI and IRS Jovem, Italy's impatriati regime and France's impatriés regime.
- Compare freelancing with a job: Dutch ZZP, Portuguese recibos verdes, Spanish autónomos and UK contractors.
- Prepare the move: visa salary thresholds, the minimum wage and average salaries, how to read a payslip, and a tax guide for each country.
Countries
What makes it different
- Rules are taken from official tax authority sources and linked, not copied from other calculators.
- The whole calculation is shown, so you can check it yourself.
- Each calculator is tested against worked examples published by the government itself before any change goes live.
- The rules people moving abroad care about are covered: rent credits, expat tax regimes and freelancing, country by country.
- Next year's budget changes are added as soon as they are announced, clearly labelled until they become law.
How we research, check and correct the numbers is set out in our editorial policy, and every source is listed on the methodology page.
Guides
Plain-English guides explain how your salary is taxed when you move, what to expect on your first payslips and which regimes to look at: Ireland tax guide, Portugal tax guide, Netherlands tax guide, Spain tax guide, Germany tax guide, Italy tax guide, France tax guide, UK tax guide, Turkey tax guide.
Independent
ExpatSalary is an independent website. It is not linked to any tax authority, government, employer or financial company, and it is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no say in the calculators or the guides.
Updates
Tax rules are reviewed at every budget and whenever a mid-year change is announced. Each country page states the tax years it covers and the date its rates were last checked, and every change is recorded in the rate updates.
